College Footbal National Title Game

Georgia Wins It

I'm not sure I'd ever seen a game this one-sided in my life. I expected TCU to give Georgia a game. I expected Georgia to win, but I didn't think it would be a blow out. Actually it wasn’t really a blow out, it was an ass kicking. I was surprised that TCU only scored once, they had a fairly high powered offense all year, yet The Bulldogs did have a really good defense.

What made it even more surprising was that both teams played two really good Big 10 teams down to the wire in their previous games. Georgia probably shouldn’t have been in the game if it weren’t for a missed field goal at the last second by Ohio State. Texas Christian played a great game against Michigan. Although, I feel they lucked out because Jim Harbaugh coaches the Wolverines and he proved once again that coaching in big games isn’t his forte.

Of the four remaining teams: Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and TCU, I think TCU was the weakest. If Michigan weren’t so poorly coached, they should have beaten TCU. However, I don’t think the final outcome would have been any different had Michigan made it to the National Title game. Georgia is a very good team, and they are well coached.

A lot of the game was centered around the quarterbacks. Stetson Bennett was on fire and deserved the offensive MVP. It’s now his second year in a row winning that award. On the other side of the ball, Max Duggan has seen better days. Of his 152 yards passing, 101 of them was to a single player. 9 targets in all, which means he spread the ball around, but a player from Georgia was right there.

A lot was made about Stetson being 25 yrs old. Yes, he’s much older than the other quarterback in college. Why he’s still eligible at that age is anyone’s guess. Does his age give him an advantage? Maybe or Maybe Not. I don’t know, I thought he played like a mature college kid should play. He was a leader and marched his team down the field every time they had the ball. In fact Georgia only punted once, while TCU 5 times.

My assumption would be that the TV ratings for this game had to be rather high at the start of the game, but it quickly fell off by halftime. TCU simply can’t hang with the big schools. They were a deserving team, but they were simply overpowered by a bigger, deeper team. I think that whoever won the Georgia vs. Ohio State game would have won the National Championship. Michigan and TCU simply weren’t as good as those two teams. Michigan got lucky in November to beat OSU.

Whatever the case, I hope that the committee gets it right next year. This was the first year that I can think of where they got it wrong. This year their hands were tied, as Michigan and Georgia were undefeated. However, I don’t think TCU was the third best team, that should have been OSU.

One thing is for sure, I’m happy that college football is finally over. It felt like a really long season. At least the bowl season seemed to have dragged on forever. Some games were entertaining, while others were just boring. Maybe we need less bowl games, or we need to extend the playoffs. I think adding more teams rather than 4 would be a great idea. Make the end of the year mean more and let them play it out. Having it decided by a group of people who don’t play, seems a bit ridiculous. But they aren’t asking me, so I’ll just leave it here in case they do want to know my opinion.
